The research part of the Masters program consists of 26 weeks of research. Students decide in consultation with the MSc Leisure Tousism and Environment advisor and Thesis advisor about the topic of their research.Students decide in consultation with the study advisor and Thesis advisor about the topic of their research. The first step in working on the MSc-thesis is the selection of a topic and a supervisor. SRA and WICE have the following list topics to consider:

  • Impacts of leisure and tourism on the quality of life
  • Lifeworlds and the experience of the environment
  • Planning and evaluation of leisure and tourism
  • New leisure or touristic landscapes and local decision making
  • Tourism, leisure and sustainable development
  • Small scale leisure or tourism entrepreneurs
  • Regional comparison in leisure or tourism development
  • Tourism chains and networks
  • Sustainable Visitor Management

Within these fields students have to choose there own topic. The final decision to accept an MSc-thesis is in any case taken by the supervisor. The research is concluded with a written thesis, which is graded by the supervisor, together with another independent staff member. The student also presents his/her results in a colloquium.

Internship
The compulsory internship consists of 16 weeks of work outside the university. This may be a paid or unpaid position. The intent of the internship is to give students a unique learning opportunity, allowing them to put many of the concepts and methods learned in the classroom into practice in a realistic professional setting. The internship also serves to help students focus their interest area and course work for the remainder of their studies, and provides maturity gained from relevant work experience. The work done during the internship is at academic level.

While securing an internship is primarily the responsibility of the student, the graduate internship coordinator provides substantial aid in locating a position and in insuring that the work experience is relevant and appropriate to the student's program of study. The internship may take place either in the Netherlands or abroad. To receive credits for your internship you must receive a satisfactory evaluation from your field supervisor and your supervisor from within the university. Usually you must also complete a satisfactory internship paper.
